June Griffin was appointed to the role of chief marketing officer of Endeavor Business Media, following Endeavor’s acquisition of several PennWell brands in February. Griffin came over with the acquisition and previously held a similar role at PennWell for the past seven years. She will also join the executive team and will be based in Tulsa, Okla.
In this new position, Griffin will be tasked with combining the Marketing and Audience Development teams across the business, which includes the teams coming from nine total acquisitions over the past 13 months. She will also oversee all of the marketing and audience development for the company’s portfolio of brands and events.
“June brings a wealth of B2B media knowledge, experience and ideas to this position which will really catapult us into a higher sphere in terms of knowing and understanding our audiences and making decisions based on data,” said Chris Ferrell, CEO of Endeavor, in a statement.

Questex announced two leadership appointments this week with Kurt Nelson taking on the role of group VP of talent strategy and Derek James as director of information technology.
Nelson brings over two decades of senior-level experience to the role, including having led Penton’s HR department as its SVP of human resources for 15 years, prior to the company’s acquisition by Informa PLC. He will also serve as a member of the Questex senior leadership team and will report directly to CEO Paul Miller, who himself started at the company following its acquisition last September by MidOcean Partners and was also a previous Penton exec. In addition to leading Questex’s talent strategy, Nelson will also help to guide Hanley Wood/Meyers Research/Metrostudy’s strategy, which were also recently acquired by MidOcean Partners at the end of last year.
James, who most recently the senior infrastructure engineer at PrismHR, is tasked with helping Questex grow organically and through the acquisition of new capabilities and assets. Prior to this, he gained career experience at O’Reilly Media and Hachette Book Group. James will report to CFO Debra S. Mason.
Theresa Torres was named the new senior director of global membership services for Bonnier Corp.’s Diversity Best Practices division, effective immediately. Torres most recently was with the nonprofit board ALPHA New Jersey, which focuses on developing Latinx leadership for its membership. Before that, she served as the senior director of campus recruiting at the human resources management service company ADP, and she served as the director of workforce development at Verizon, in addition to holding various diversity and talent acquisition roles at Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch.
Barron’s announced the promotion of Lauren Rublin to senior managing editor, an expanded role from her previous position of managing editor, roundtables and special projects. Rublin has been with Barron’s the majority of her career and started at the brand as a staff writer. In this new role, she will serve as executive editor Bob Rose’s second-in-command in all aspects, including running the magazine in his absence. She will continue with her existing duties as editor of the Barron’s Roundtable franchise and other special projects.
Alex Eule and Ben Levisohn were also promoted this week to deputy editors of Barron’s. In their expanded roles, Eule and Levisohn will take on more responsibilities for driving daily news coverage including working closely with editors and reporters. Levisohn is leading morning coverage, as well as continuing with his existing duties as the managing editor of markets, and Eule is taking afternoons in addition to continuing as the managing editor of disruption, which oversees technology coverage.
Quad (formerly Quad/Graphics) named Gwen Maass as its VP of media services this week. In this role, Maass will be responsible for helping to sharpen and expand the company’s shopper media offering for retail and CPG clients, as well as use her many years of experience in the print and digital media space to advance Quad’s media planning and buying services.
Maass spent the majority of her career at Novus Media—a former a division of Omnicom Media Group—where she was most recently the chief marketing officer and was deeply involved in evaluating, setting and implementing the strategic vision for the agency, while also overseeing the Client Services, Media Investment, Strategic Planning and Business Development teams. While at Novus Media, she also served as president, vice president and managing director and managing director of agency services.
According to The Daily Beast, Vernon Loeb is stepping down from his role as the politics editor of The Atlantic after joining the magazine less than a year ago. He will be starting at the non-profit digital site InsideClimate News as its new senior editor of for investigations, enterprise and innovations. As politics editor, Loeb oversaw the publication’s politics coverage and was hired as part of The Atlantic’s initiative to grow by 100 staffers in a year. Prior to this, Loeb served as the managing editor at the Houston Chronicle, and held previous roles at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
Time added four new editorial staffers to its newsroom this week:
- Elijah Wolfson is joining as a health editor based in New York. He most recently was the science and health editor at Quartz, where he spearheaded several investigations at the intersection of these industries. Before that, he was a senior editor at Newsweek.
- Alex Rees is the new news editor for Time. He previously served as the pop culture editor and then the deputy editor of news for Cosmopolitan.com, and before that, he served as the fashion editor for BuzzFeed and the fashion news editor for New York Magazine’s The Cut.
- Cate Matthews was named accolades editor, where she will help launch new lists and franchises, as well as expand existing ones. Previously, she was the executive editor of the digital media site A Plus, where she oversaw editorial, video and distribution initiatives. Before that, Matthews was also a founding member of The Huffington Post’s digital innovations team.
- And finally, Lissandra Villa was hired as a staff writer based in Washington, D.C. to cover the 2020 presidential election. She previously was a political reporter for BuzzFeed News and before that, she was an intern in Time’s D.C. bureau.
Dan Gilgoff started at AARP as its new executive editor for digital and content this week. Before this, Gilgoff spent nearly six years at National Geographic, most recently serving as the VP and executive editor of digital from the end of 2015 until October 2018. While there, he led the editorial, production and distribution teams, grew traffic and video views by double digits, and spearheaded multimillion dollar sponsorships with global brands.
Inc. Magazine’s San Francisco bureau chief Jeff Bercovici is leaving after almost five years to join the Los Angeles Times as its new deputy business editor, where he will oversee technology coverage. While at Inc., he helped to chronicle the rise and fall of many Silicon Valley startups, and prior to that, he spent four years at Forbes as a staff writer and later a senior editor. He will continue to be based in the Bay Area.
The Advocate editor-in-chief Zach Stafford is taking on the added responsibility of co-hosting BuzzFeed News’ “AM to DM” podcast, in addition to continuing to lead the magazine. Stafford will be hosting the show alongside Alex Berg, who previously served as a supervising producer on “AM to DM,” and has written for NBC News and Teen Vogue. Both are succeeding the original hosts Isaac Fitzgerald and Saeed Jones, who recently resigned in order to pursue individual writing projects. Stafford will now be based in The Advocate’s New York City office.
Former Time Inc. publisher Margot Schupf was tapped as the head of Americas for Bloomberg Media Distribution. As the publisher of Time Inc. books and special editions, Schupf led a multifaceted publishing division that worked with the entire brand portfolio and she helped to create a strategy that led the division exceed internal profit targets for three consecutive years. Before Time Inc., she was an exec at the e-commerce and content curation startup Archetypes, as well as at Rodale, Barnes and Noble and HarperCollins Publishers.
In this newly created role, Schupf will focus on looking for ways to accelerate growth through partnerships and new products, and she will report directly to Scott Havens, the global head of digital & media distribution for Bloomberg.
Cathy Hirko was promoted to associate publisher/editorial director of Lehigh Valley Business, Central Penn Business Journal and Central Penn Parent, all of which are owned by BridgeTower Media. She will now have oversight over all editorial operations and will take a renewed focus on community engagement, in addition to developing new products.
Hirko joined Central Penn Business Journal in February 2016 as its managing editor and her responsibilities expanded in 2018 when she took over leadership of the Lehigh Valley Business newsroom in Bethlehem. Before joining CPBJ, she managed The Evening Sun in Hanover and held business and assistant metro editor positions for the York Daily Record. She is succeeding former CPBJ and Parent publisher, Kathryn Ross, who is exiting the company. Hirko will report to group publisher Suzanne Fischer-Huettner.
The Spectator USA named Curt Mills as its new Washington editor, who will be tasked with helping to expand the U.K.-based brand in the U.S., as well as launch in print this October. He has been a contributing reporter to the magazine since February 2018, in addition to having served as a foreign affairs reporter for the National Interest. Spectator USA also named Dominic Green as its new Life and Arts editor.
Former Politico White House and national security editor, Michael Crowley, is joining the New York Times as a White House correspondent, starting June 17. Before Politico, Crowley was the chief foreign affairs correspondent for Time, a senior editor at The New Republic, a reporter for the The Boston Globe and a contributor to The New York Times Magazine, New York, GQ and Slate.
